joan of arcadia

I might as well get this out of the way because I'm going straight to hell for this -- I'm one of those sickos that, in theory, likes the Joan/CBG 'ship. I say 'in theory' because I actually don't like most of the fics centering around this pairing. Go figure.

After An Afternoon
PG | Joan/Adam
Summary: Joan doesn't get it.
Most Joan/Adam fics are too sappy for my tastes. However, this one involving Joan attempting to "[Figure] Out Adam" is just right.

Ectasy and Agony
PG-13 | Joan, God
Summary: He's always there... if only she could realize that. After years of not seeing him, God visits Joan.
A lovely look from God's POV regarding a fallen Joan. The last two lines of the fic just sums everything up beautifully.

I Did it My Way?
G | Joan
Summary: Joan reflects briefly on her life since God, and knows as we all do she still has a long way to go in understanding His mysterious ways...
I miss season 1 Joan and this fic captures her voice and attitude as an average teen with a not-so-average calling perfectly.

Illusion
PG | Joan, God, Helen
Summary: Set directly after The Silence. Joan actually wakes up when Cute Boy God comes to visit her and he faces her anger.
A great 'what if' look at the conversation Joan and God could have had. The dialogue is something you could see playing out on screen and Helen is perfect.

Leda, Mary and the Rest
PG-13 | Grace, God
Summary: Grace Polk is curious about Joan's new friend.
I initally avoided this fic because it was labeled Grace/CBG. Then because I had nothing else to read I steeled my stomach and dove in expecting the worst. I was so wrong. It's a great Grace-centric fic and not what one expects from the labeling.

Safe
G | Joan, God
Summary: Joan feels safe in his arms.
A very short fic that could be an AU/Missing Scene from 'Recreation'. This one leans a bit more 'shippy than my other recs, but still can be read in whichever way you want to take it.

same sky
PG | Joan, God
Summary: She lies under the desert sky at night and thinks she can see his face in the stars.
A lovely ficlet in which God sends Joan on a different sort of journey.

Snapshots of a Hero's Journey
PG-13 | Joan, God, Adam | Crossovers with Angel and Due South
Summary: God sends Joan on a mission to help people around America. It turns into one year-long road trip.
37 drabbles that form a larger narrative. It's got a healthy (unhealthy?) dose of Joan/God in it, but don't let that put you off. The author makes it work in the context of the series and without turning God into a hormonal teenager.

Summer, God and, Manolos
PG-13 | Summer, God | Crossover with The OC
Summary: God shouldn't wear fake Prada
This crossover has more of an OC focus but features Joan's God(s) as we know and love 'em.

The Darkest Night
PG-13 | Joan, God
Summary: Joan finds comfort where she least expects it.
Though I really don't see Joan as suicidal and I really dislike those types of fics, I like this one. The inital Joan/CBG warning scared me, but honestly I see this more as Joan/God frienship than actual 'ship. Read into what you will.

The OTHER Cute Boy
PG-13 | Joan, OC, God, Adam
Summary: While waiting for Adam, Joan gets an unexpected visit from CuteBoyGod... or so she thinks.
Normally CBG-as-a-mortal fics have me running in the opposite direction, but the author gives it a twist and makes it work (my only quibble is the 'nod to the actor' character name and 'nod to the actor' references -- those little touches tend to pull me out of a fic) and while it's got elements of Joan/God, Joan/Adam fans will not be disappointed.
