firefly / serenity
I loved the series, liked how it ended and actually don't really mind that it only had 13 episodes.
On the other hand, I sort of prefer to pretend Serenity (the movie) never happened.
A Million Light Years from Home
PG | Ensemble, Sirius | Crossover with Harry Potter
Summary: "You're a long, long way from home, but you're a good dog."
Crossover with 'Harry Potter' which I didn't think could work, but does. I can't say if Sirius is
100% in character, but the Firefly crew is and while I understand why the author chose the ending she did,
I found myself wanting the other possible ending (and after you read the fic, you'll know why).
A New Friend?
G | Mal, Jayne, Kaylee
Summary: Mal, Jayne and Kaylee met someone new... and yet strangely familiar...
I've seen variations of this fic in various fandoms, with varying results. This is one that
works. The crew is in character and it's hilarious. I don't want to spoil it by saying anymore, just go
and read!
An Object in Space
PG-13 | Jubal Early
Summary: Early at the end of "Objects in Space."
I loved the episode and Jubal Early. This, I think, is a great spot on look into his mind as he
floats to oblivion.
B-Team
PG | Wash, Kaylee, Simon, Jayne
Summary: They're the heroes who will save the day. Maybe.
A great story with characterization and dialouge that's episode worthy.
Big Damn Zombies, Sir
PG-13 | Ensemble
Summary: "He eats all their brains / And he gnaws on their bones / Was never too bright / Now he's
dead as the stones / Our love for this idea's not hard to explain / Who could resist him, the zombie
called Jayne!"
There is a reason why this fic is on most Firefly rec lists -- it's hilarious and despite the
outlandish situation the crew finds themselves in, this could easily be an unaired Halloween episode of
the show.
Captain Malcolm Reynolds User's Guide and Manual
G | Mal
Summary: You are now the proud owner of a CAPTAIN MALCOLM REYNOLDS (henceforth MAL) unit! In order
to obtain top performance from your Browncoat Rebel, please follow the procedures detailed in this manual
Who knew a technical instuction manual could be so entertaining?
Catalytic Equations
PG | River, Mal
Summary: River ponders on Mal and does the math.
I love this look at how River perceives things and the slightly suprising pairing in the fic
(which I personally like, it's just I don't see it in fic very often).
Dear Mother
PG | Jayne
Summary: Jayne writes a letter to home while he broods about the addition of the new doctor.
The fic is actually a bit like Jayne. At first glance it's rather funny and sweet, but as you
get further into it, it takes a bit of a dark and creepy turn.
Eavesdown
PG | Simon
Summary: How Simon found "Serenity."
This is the Simon I always pictured pre-series. In over his head and trying his best to get River
to safey. My only quibble is the way a sentence in pinyin was written, in numbers rather than tone marks,
which suddenly pulled me out of the fic.
Eros and Agape
R | River, Simon, Kaylee
Summary: River knows the difference.
Slight shades of CSI (Crazy Space Incest, which I'm not particularly crazy for) but I still love
this look at how River views her relationship with Simon versus his with Kaylee.
Flying Lessons
G | Kaylee, Simon
Summary: Serenity loses gravity temporarily
A rather sweet Simon/Kaylee moment. Something I could definitely picture happening in the series,
though if it were an episode moment, I'm sure Simon would've insulted Kaylee halfway through the scene.
Flying Lessons
PG | River, Wash | Post-Serenity (movie spoilers)
Summary: River likes her piloting lessons best when she has Serenity's bridge all to herself.
A great River and Wash moment, I love the atomsphere created and the ending just kills you.
Freedom
PG-13 | Kaylee
Summary: By the age of eighteen, there were exactly two things that Kaywinnit Lee Frye loved to do.
A lovely look at a pre-series Kaylee.
Hybrid Lives
G | Ensemble | Post-Serenity (movie spoilers)
Summary: A series of vignettes examining each of the crew after the events of "Serenity".
Because it explores the aftermath of the movie, there's plenty of sad moments, but it never
becomes depressing. Instead you're offered glimpses at how each character has changed and how they're
living and moving on.
In Principle, In Practice
G | Inara
Summary: For Inara, what should be collides with what is.
This is a fantastic look at Inara and why she fits in with the crew of Serenity.
Letting Go
PG | Kaylee
Summary: She was in love with that ship already -- he could tell. And you couldn't talk a lick of
sense into a girl in love.
A really sweet pre-series fic (or missing scene for 'Out of Gas') that looks at Kaylee from the
POV of a father who's just not ready to let go of his baby.
Love Is
PG | Ensemble
Summary: Sure. She knows what love is.
A great, though slightly heartbreaking look at love aboard Serentiy from River's POV.
Par For The Course
G | Simon
Summary: He's never had to think about food before.
I love this look at how Simon slowly adjusts to life aboard Serenity all in the context of food.
Pretty Boys
PG-13 | Jayne
Summary: Jayne reflects on members of the crew.
I have a soft spot for one-sided Jayne/Kaylee and this fic totally takes advantage of it, making
me want to toss Simon out of an airlock on Jayne's behalf.
Settlement
PG-13 | Mal/Simon
Summary: Simon has settled. Mal hasn't. Future fic.
Although the pairing isn't my cup of tea, it just works so well here.
The Light Fantastic
G | Kaylee, Simon
Summary: Kaylee and Simon spend a few moments before the ball in Shindig.
While this is a rather sweet little Kaylee/Simon moment, my favorite part is Mal's outburst (which
I can totally hear Nathan Fillion saying) -- "Kaylee! You'd best be dyin' or you're gorram sure about
t'be!"
Waltz
PG | Kaylee, Simon
Summary: Set after "Shindig."
In the commentary for 'Shindig' it was mentioned that Kaylee dancing with Simon in one of the
last scenes of the episode was scripted, but was never filmed. This fic almost makes up for that.
